The moment of darkness inside him slowly gave way to look at the reality. Suddenly his eyes scanned thru the unknown faces “where is Radhika?’
He got up from there and tried to look around thoroughly.
His eyes met Gopal’s anxious face, and walked near
“Dad, Radhika?’
Gopal just looked at him with his flushed face and just said “inside”
“can I?’
“not now, mom is with her, and santi teacher and few friends, she fainted, and we are wating for her to regain her conscious”
A sharp pain passed thru his body “how it all….?’
“Padma was crossing the road and a speeding truck; it hit and she has been thrown to a distance with its force, the witness people said she got up for few second, straightening herself, she tried to take a step, and everyone thought nothing happened to her, and as they went near to check her, she fainted and before reaching the hospital, she lost the battle, its all God’s decision”
He heard everything, and stood silently with his dad.
“notified Padma’s house also, so expecting someone should be here before all the kriyas’
Dev heard that too very passively. His eyes were still waiting to see her face.
Soon his heart ached seeing her walking in, Mahi and Santhi were holding her tight by her shoulder. Her hair was open, and her eyes were swollen red, but dried, her gaze were down on the floor where her mom is laying. Her body was so weak that she cannot take any more step, her feet moved with the force on her shoulder, but she made it near and went and sat where Mahi directed with her force.
She just sat there silently looking at her mom’s face, the flat affect on her face clearly showed her denial to accept the fact in front of her.
He wished to go near and take her in his embrace for once and wanted to shout loud “just cry your heart out Radhika, I can hold you”
The time just passed by, and the students were coming with flowers and keeping that near her feet, Dev has been called into for more help and was moving around. Soon the news came that Padma’s mom just stepped in with one of her helper. The old lady came and stood near the body, and then someone pointed finger at Radhika. The lady just looked at her once, and then walked out. The helper came with the decisions made by the known people around Padma, she just nodded her head to move on. As if getting the permission, few students came along with Dev to take her body. Dev stood near the foot end and looked at RAdhika, met her same face.
Mahi held Radhika closer to her body while they took her body out from the hall. Time passed and the dark smoke curled up in the air, everything was going accordingly and the lady was giving approval without questioning anything.
Time passed , and one by one started dispersing back to their home, showing their sorry face to Radhika, she looked at everyone blindly unable to recognize who is who, and just moved her eyes balls to their good words and their condolence, and few just looked at her face and left without words, few shed their tears losing their control, but nothing shook her attitude, she faced everything with the strength of Mahi’s arms.
Dev and Gopal came back along with few students and few teachers. They were mainly discussing on Radhika’s status, but then took the decision that she can be with Gopal for now, and with that decision they all dispersed. The old lady was listening to everything and standing without saying anything.
The helper of the old lady brought food for everyone, it left on that table un open. Dev brought some water to Mahi, and Mahi tried to make Radhika to take a sip, but she refused.
Radhika tried to get up from the bed, and Mahi helped her. She walked into her mom’s room in trance and walked near to the table. She picked the picture frame and looked into it. Dev’s shadow fell onto it, and his eyes saw the couples photo.
Radhika looked at Mahi and said “mom used to tell me that papa loved her so much, I should be thankful to papa that he let her stay with me till now, right?. How long I can separate them, right?’
Maheswari just pulled her into her embrace and said: no more, ok, don’t talk like this, I can’t take it, I just can’t. you better listen to me and drink some water. Maheswari looked at Dev and orders “give me that water bottle”
And Dev just followed his mother’s order, and opening the cap he gave that in Maheswari’s hand.
Maheswari forwarded that near to Radhika’s lips, and she took few gulps ,like a obedient student.

Radhika looked at Mahi with pleading eyes conveying to feel her pain to gulp it down.
Realizing her agony, she gave the bottle back in Dev’s hand.
He felt some relief seeing her gulping at least two drops in.
Gopal came in and pulling Mahi’s to the side said that Padma’s mom wants to meet Radhika.
Maheswari looked at Gopal in surprise and then looked at Radhika. But then walking near her Maheswari mumbled: your nani is here, you need to meet her, come
Radhika questioned the relation with her eyes to maheswari, and Maheswari was only about to nod her head in agreement
“I don’t want to meet anyone”
She said soflty....", I don’t have anybody, I , ... I am alone, I don’t have anybody , all I have is my mom, but now papa called her, and I will wait for them to call me too, mom cannot leave me like this, I will wait here for her to come and call me, she will come soon to take me with her, I don’t have anybody else and I don’t need anybody else.
The three people near her stood there listening to her words, unable to stop her, unable to speak out to stop her… but then
“Radhika, you are not alone, we are here na”
Dev’s throat tried to voice out , ‘dad, mom, Pari, and then me, we are here na, then how can you say like this, you are not alone”
His arm just moved to take her in his embrace forgetting everyone around,
“what did you say, tell one more time”
Dev stopped as the old lady’s sound echoed inside. Dev pulled his arm back , and looked at the old lady
Coming near she looked at Radhika’s face, and then with full freedom she said: I am your nani, you can call me ammaji, so you are also like your mom, stubborn, um? Ok listen, you are not alone, now you have me, and you have cousins, uncles and aunts, you belong to a big family, your mom kept you away from all of us, but not anymore, tomorrow you are going to come with me, to your house where you belong.
Radhika looked at her Nani’s face, she couldn’t feel any coonection, and she releasing her hand , moved near to Mahi, and Mahi tried to hold her closer”
“so you are here too!’
Mahi didn’t look at Radhika’s Nani’s face, but rubbed over RAdhika’s upper arm, keeping her closer
Nani continued: you were there with all her silly plans , right? I really got surprised to see you here Mahi, what I heard was you got married to a Gulf guy and left this place. So what happened? Hu? Did someone tried to mello me with that thought ya you really left and came back now. Then also it is a surprise you came and staying closer to your friend only.”
Nani continued: it was not a good time so I let you hold her, but now you know that I am here and I can take care for her, and you can
Dev lost his patience that : who are you to say all these, we never seen you here before?
Nani looked at Dev and gave a smirk smile: who am i? Ask your mom, she used to call me Ammaji, and what they did behind my back taking my girl away from me, she doesn’t know how hurtful it was, now she is trying to take my granddaughter also away from me? What you think, I let her win that easily again?
The words were flying around, and at one point Radhika’s eye lids gave up and rolling her eyeballs, she lost her balance.
Suddenly droping the bottle in his hand, Dev tried to hold her, and her weaker body just got suspended in his arms, lifting her up in his arms he put her down on the bed
“mom , water’
Maheswari anxiously looked around while Gopal carried the bottle and gave in Dev’s hand. He sprayed the water on her face, and few minutes passed Radhika slowly opened her eyes, still resting her head over his upper chest.
“Radhika beta, you ok, I told you to drink more water and you didn’t listen na, now take some more sip, or else’
Radhika tired to sit up straight, but her weaker body did not listen to her wish, but she mumbled “ I am fine auntie’
But then again fell back onto his chest. Dev held her closer and looked at mahi in concern.
Gopal: I will get the doctor
Saying that he walked out.
Nani stood there looking at Radhika
Maheswari tried to rub on Radhika’s feet and her hands, while Dev held her strong in his hold.
Dev made her ly in bed comfortably as the doctor walked in. The Doctor examined Radhika, and her weaker pulse gave him the signal of her condition, but the situation was such that, he called out for more help and a nurse came along with an attender and they were able to start a IV drip on her.
Time ticked by and they all sat in same room while ammaji waited outside in the hall.
Towards morning Radhika was able to open her eyes and she looked at her painful hand, and found Mahi sitting near with holding her arms. Her eyes scanned and she found Dev still standing near the open window holding something in his hand and looking outside.
She tried to move her throat, and Dev jerked to look at her, Seeing her open eyes he walked near to the bed, and Radhika’s eyes just followed his nearing and the thing in his hand. He kept the photo frame of her mom and papa over the table and walking near asked ; how are you feeling now?.
Hearing the voice Maheswari opened her eyes and found Radhika awake : how are you beta?
RAdhika just nodded her head conveying she is fine.
“you really scared us Radhika, don’t do like this ok, you need to be strong, don’t get weak like this beta, we all here na”
Radhika didn’t say anything and ly like that only.
The nurse came and assessed her ,and reported her condition to the doctor.
Maheswari helped her to get up and freshen up, but still the face looked so pale and her body much weaker. She went home to get freshen up herself while Dev and Gopal still made there presence near Radhika. Few teachers started showing up their face, and a new day in RAdhika’s life started and under others words and she followed everything like a doll, holding onto that photo frame closer to hear heart...
